Power up the Tower

This Spring sees the return of the Sweat Fitness Festival to Gunwharf Quays alongside the inaugural ‘Power up the Tower’ taking place at the Spinnaker Tower After a successful pilot event in 2021, the Sweat Fitness Festival is returning to the iconic, waterfront destination of Gunwharf Quays. The Festival is a celebration of fitness, sport and well-being over two days in late April. Free-to-attend and family-friendly, the Festival aims to break down barriers for people wanting to explore a new sport or fitness activity, whilst celebrating and promoting active lifestyles. The Plaza will host independent and national fitness providers and sports teams, whilst a stage plays host to a wide range of activities including Street Dance, Diddi Dance, Yoga and Zumba.

Festival Founder, Luke Newton said: “It is exciting to bring the Festival back to Gunwharf for a second time. The support and enthusiasm that the Gunwharf management team show is really appreciated and helps us to inspire people to lead more active lives. We are looking forward to a fun weekend!” The Festival supports Pompey in the Community and The RNLI. On the eve of the Festival, Luke is also hosting a Tower Run. Power up the Tower will see runners take on the 530 steps up the internal stairwell of the Spinnaker Tower! £5 of every ticket sold is going to the RNLI whilst the event is also a part of th e World Tower Running Championships!

Power up the Tower Founder, Luke Newton said: “We are welcoming elite tower runners from across the UK and even Europe, but this is a unique challenge for anyone to be a part of. The RNLI do amazing work and needs the support of donations to continue saving lives at sea. It is a privilege to be able to work with them and support them in any way we can” Claire Cardwell – RNLI Fundraising & Partnerships Lead South East, said: “The RNLI is delighted to be working with Sweat Fitness to raise money to save lives in 2023. Without amazing teams like this, and their supporters in the local area, the RNLI would not be able to launch our lifeboats or man the beaches with our lifeguards, keeping thousands of people safe and preventing drowning across the UK and Ireland. A huge thank you from the RNLI to everyone involved in the Sweat fitness events this year – you’re all lifesavers!” Michael Richetzeder, Sports Director at www.towerrunning.com said: “We welcome Power up the Tower on our Towerrunning Tour and look forward exciting action on the stairs of the iconic Spinnaker Tower in April !”

Tony Sammut General Manager Spinnaker Tower said; “Whether it’s by climbing up the Tower or abseiling down, we love to see people enjoying a challenge and look forward to the community coming together for Power up The Tower. It’s a privilege to host the event and show our appreciation for the RNLI volunteers who go out on the water, often in very difficult conditions, saving lives at sea.”
