Find out more about our fundraising event, Walking to the North Pole for MacMillan

Join a merry team of Elves at Spinnaker Tower as they embark on a festive challenge. They’ll be walking the distance between Spinnaker Tower and Lapland. All to raise funds for people living with cancer this Christmas.

According to Google Maps, the distance between the iconic Portsmouth landmark and the home of Father Christmas is around 1,915 miles. So, about the same as walking more than 3.8 million steps.

Each elf has pledged to walk five miles, or 10,000 steps, every day this December. The aim? To complete the epic journey. And also, help raise funds and awareness for the vital work of Macmillan Cancer Support!

This festive feat comes as part of our year-long partnership between the cancer charity and Spinnaker Tower, with Macmillan Cancer Support’s logo currently on proud display.

Tony Sammut said: “It’s a long way to the North Pole, but the Spinnaker Tower team are determined to complete this challenge in support of our partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support.

“We’re on track to reach our target by Christmas Day and grateful for every penny donated so far in support of this wonderful charity. It supports so many people living with cancer in Portsmouth and beyond, every step of the way.”

If you’d like to support the team’s fundraising efforts, visit our just giving page https://bit.ly/3GtBbqK to donate.

The Macmillan Cancer Support Information Centre at Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth (QAH) is open Monday to Friday 10am-4pm. They’re always here to ensure people with cancer in the Portsmouth get the help they need. Be it financial, practical, emotional or psychological.

This Spring sees the return of the Sweat Fitness Festival to Gunwharf Quays alongside the inaugural ‘Power up the Tower’ taking place at the Spinnaker Tower After a successful pilot event in 2021, the Sweat Fitness Festival is returning to the iconic, waterfront destination of Gunwharf Quays. The Festival is a celebration of fitness, sport and well-being over two days in late April. Free-to-attend and family-friendly, the Festival aims to break down barriers for people wanting to explore a new sport or fitness activity, whilst celebrating and promoting active lifestyles. The Plaza will host independent and national fitness providers and sports teams, whilst a stage plays host to a wide range of activities including Street Dance, Diddi Dance, Yoga and Zumba.

Festival Founder, Luke Newton said: “It is exciting to bring the Festival back to Gunwharf for a second time. The support and enthusiasm that the Gunwharf management team show is really appreciated and helps us to inspire people to lead more active lives. We are looking forward to a fun weekend!” The Festival supports Pompey in the Community and The RNLI. On the eve of the Festival, Luke is also hosting a Tower Run. Power up the Tower will see runners take on the 530 steps up the internal stairwell of the Spinnaker Tower! £5 of every ticket sold is going to the RNLI whilst the event is also a part of th e World Tower Running Championships!

Power up the Tower Founder, Luke Newton said: “We are welcoming elite tower runners from across the UK and even Europe, but this is a unique challenge for anyone to be a part of. The RNLI do amazing work and needs the support of donations to continue saving lives at sea. It is a privilege to be able to work with them and support them in any way we can” Claire Cardwell – RNLI Fundraising & Partnerships Lead South East, said: “The RNLI is delighted to be working with Sweat Fitness to raise money to save lives in 2023. Without amazing teams like this, and their supporters in the local area, the RNLI would not be able to launch our lifeboats or man the beaches with our lifeguards, keeping thousands of people safe and preventing drowning across the UK and Ireland. A huge thank you from the RNLI to everyone involved in the Sweat fitness events this year – you’re all lifesavers!” Michael Richetzeder, Sports Director at www.towerrunning.com said: “We welcome Power up the Tower on our Towerrunning Tour and look forward exciting action on the stairs of the iconic Spinnaker Tower in April !”

Tony Sammut General Manager Spinnaker Tower said; “Whether it’s by climbing up the Tower or abseiling down, we love to see people enjoying a challenge and look forward to the community coming together for Power up The Tower. It’s a privilege to host the event and show our appreciation for the RNLI volunteers who go out on the water, often in very difficult conditions, saving lives at sea.”

Thelma, 90, abseils Spinnaker Tower in an intrepid act of bravery. She took the plunge with an 100m abseil to support Woking and Sam Beare Hospice

Intrepid pensioner Thelma Forbes is to tackle a thrilling abseil down Portsmouth’s iconic Spinnaker Tower to raise funds for her local hospice charity  – at the age of 90.

Thelma, of Woking, will make the adrenaline-fuelled 100-metre descent on Saturday, August 26th in support of Woking and Sam Beare Hospice and Wellbeing. She has already received more than £2,000 in pledges from well-wishers, smashing her initial £500 target.

Thelma is a devoted supporter of the hospice and the abseil follows a fundraising skydive she took on at the tender age of 75.

She said: “I support the hospice as much as I can as I’ve seen the good work they do and it’s very close to my heart. At the age of 90 I thought I’ve got to do something spectacular – and after a skydive, what could be better than an abseil?

“I have been to Spinnaker Tower before and walked across the glass floor. It’s an amazing place in such a lovely area, with great views. I know how high it is, but I don’t really want to think about that as it’s terrifying!

“However, it’s all in a good cause. I know my family will be there to support me when I reach the ground.”

Thelma, a former air stewardess and school support worker, has two daughters and three grown-up grandchildren. They are proud of her bravery and can-do attitude.

“They just keep asking me what I’m going to do when I’m 100!” added Thelma, who said she was considering a zip-line challenge and getting her first tattoo.

Thelma’s daughter, Janine Forbes, said: “Mum is the most determined person I know. You may think she is a meek and mild little old lady, but she has a will of iron and once she has set her sights on something, nothing can stop her!

“She is quite simply the heart of our family, and her generosity towards others is truly inspiring.”

Tony Sammut, General Manager at Spinnaker Tower, said: “At Spinnaker Tower we are all amazed and inspired by Thelma. We look forward to welcoming her to Spinnaker Tower to experience the amazing rush of descending 100 metres down our waterfront landmark in aid of a good cause.

“She will join the hundreds of people of all ages who have taken on the challenge over the years. Raising more than £500,000 for charities along the way.”

Kerry Gibb, Press Officer of Woking and Sam Beare Hospice, said this. “Sometimes you meet people in life who make such an impact on you that you never forget them. This is how we at the Hospice feel about Thelma. Her zest for life at such an incredible age is contagious. She is an absolute superstar!”

Sam Wakefield, Marketing Executive responsible for managing challenges also commented. “The money raised will go towards supporting our 20-bed hospice and our work in the community around Surrey.

“We look after around 2,000 patients a year. Although we do get some funding from the NHS, a large percentage of our income comes from legacies and from wonderful fundraisers like Thelma. Her family are so proud of her, and so are we.”

Support Thelma’s fundraiser by visiting here JustGiving page.

From April to September, guests can abseil the tower as a personal challenge, charity fundraiser or team-building exercise.

Abseiling gift vouchers are available for the ultimate present for thrill-seekers. For more information see www.spinnakertower.co.uk/events/event/abseiling

On July 25, we will be illuminated blue to help the National Water Safety Forum raise awareness for World Drowning Prevention Day.

Globally, an estimated 235,600 people drown every year, and drowning is among the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5-14 years. There were 226 deaths in the UK from accidental drownings in 2022 and 40% of these were accidental, caused by slips, trips and falls, being cut off by the tide, or swept in by waves.

To mark this year’s World Drowning Prevention Day, the NWSF is focused on raising awareness of drowning as a public health issue, reminding people that anyone can drown, but no one should.

Tony Sammut, General Manager at Spinnaker Tower, said: “We’re honoured to support this cause and hope to remind people of the tragic impact of drowning on families and communities. We also want to highlight the work the NWSF are doing to offer life-saving solutions for drowning prevention.”

Portsmouth University is also supporting the cause. Researchers from the university’s Extreme Environments research group (EEG) have carried out instrumental work on drowning prevention and have also contributed to the RNLI’s ‘Respect the Water’ and ‘Float to Live’ national water safety campaign.

Heather Massey, Senior Lecturer in Sport, Exercise and Health at University of Portsmouth, said: “Raising awareness about drowning is so important, but we should also know how to enjoy the water safely and know what to do if you see someone in difficulty. World Drowning Prevention Day provides the opportunity to raise awareness of all of these.”

In April 2021, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly affirmed drowning as a preventable global public health issue and declared July 25 as World Drowning Prevention Day. World Health Organisation (WHO) helps to coordinate activities on drowning prevention.

We join landmarks up and down the country lighting up during the evening of July 25, including Blackpool Tower and Millennium Bridge in Newcastle.
